Canada Summer Jobs 2008

Issue:

Canada Summer Jobs 2008

Fact:

“Supporting Students: Serving Communities”

Canada Summer Jobs 2008 will support work experiences for students and organizations, including those that provide important community services for children, families, people with disabilities, seniors, and others.

In 2008, funding will be offered to not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers, and small businesses to create summer jobs opportunities for young people 15 to 30 years old who are full-time students and intend to return to their studies in the next academic year. Larger private-sector employers with more than 50 employees will not be eligible for funding.

The Canada Summer Jobs budget of $97.5 million will be allocated across the 308 federal constituencies.

We have streamlined the assessment criteria used to evaluate employer applications to focus on the following:

  • service to local communities;
  • jobs that support local priorities (special events or other defined local priorities, such as tourism);
  • jobs that provide career-related experience or early work experience;
  • a salary that contributes to the student’s income;
  • an employer who provides supervision and mentoring;
  • project activities that are directed toward members of, and support the vitality of, an official-language minority community; and
  • an employer who intends to hire priority students (students with disabilities, Aboriginal students, and students who are members of visible minority groups).

The application period for Canada Summer Jobs 2008 started February 1 and ended February 29, 2008. The applications received are now being assessed. Applicants will be notified in April and May 2008.

Canada Summer Jobs 2008 – Notification Period

Fact:

Canada Summer Jobs 2008 is now entering its notification period, during which Service Canada officials will be contacting all applicants to inform them of funding decisions. In the next few weeks, successful organizations across the country will begin projects that will provide students with career-related work experiences.

Service Canada has made efforts since it launched the initiative to ensure that Canada Summer Jobs 2008 benefits students and communities in every part of Canada, and responds to community priorities and differing circumstances.

Canada Summer Jobs funding is offered to not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers, and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees to create summer job opportunities for full-time students who are 15 to 30 years old, and who intend to return to their studies in the next academic year.

This year’s initiative is focused on supporting organizations that provide important community services for children, families, people with disabilities, seniors, and others.

Canada Summer Jobs received almost 30,000 applications this year. The Canada Summer Jobs budget of $97.5 million is allocated across the 308 federal constituencies to organizations that best respond to community priorities.

Members of Parliament had the opportunity to ensure local priorities were reflected in the assessment criteria, and to validate the lists of projects recommended for funding by using their detailed knowledge of their constituencies’ local priorities and circumstances.

Service Canada will post the list of funding recipients on its Web site once it has processed all the claims from funded employers.
