The Office of Learning Technologies (OLT) acts as a catalyst for innovation in skills development and learning enabled by technology; encourages collaboration among public and private sector organizations who want to use technologies to expand learning opportunities; and provides a national focal point for information sharing on the effective use of learning technologies.
The OLT administers 3 funding initiatives: the Effective Use of Learning Technologies Initiative; Community Learning Networks Initiative; and Workplace Learning Technologies Initiative. OLT contributions support projects that make use of technologies to expand life-long learning opportunities, and help Canadians acquire the skills and knowledge needed to prosper in a knowledge based society. These cost-shared contribution projects facilitate collaboration among community organizations, non-governmental organizations, learning institutions and educators, business, labour, governments and other public institutions. The projects are both national and local in scope.
The Learning Technologies Initiative supports projects that contribute to the increased understanding and awareness of learning technologies - what they have to offer; how they can be adapted and applied in a variety of settings; and how adult learners with varying needs and capabilities can best take advantage of them.
The Community Learning Networks Initiative was launched in late 1998 and supports time-limited pilot projects, in partnership with community organizations, that can offer multi-point access to a variety of learning resources within and across communities.
Workplace Learning Technologies Initiative is a new initiative currently under development.
