World Urban Forum, June 19-23, 2006, Vancouver, Canada - Transforming Ideas into Action

World Urban Forum 3 - Vancouver, Canada, June 19-23, 2006The rapid increase in urbanization is a world-wide challenge. That is why Canada is proud to be hosting the World Urban Forum 3 (WUF3), a UN-HABITAT sponsored event, where key players from all over the world will gather to share experiences and transform ideas into action to improve the quality of life in urban areas.

Almost 80 percent of our population lives in communities, making Canada one of the most urbanized countries in the world. The annual global survey on urban quality of living ranks Canadian cities among the best in the world. The WUF3 host city, Vancouver, is ranked third among more than 350 cities.

WUF3 is more important than ever. Throughout the world, 1.3 million people every week move to or are born into an urban environment. If this trend continues, by 2050 developing nations will have to build the equivalent of a city of more than one million people every week.

The Government of Canada recognizes the important role that strong communities play in serving the needs of people, no matter where they live in the world. That is why the Government supports communities and works with all partners-both in Canada and abroad-to build strong, dynamic, healthy, and safe communities.

Canada looks forward to sharing its experiences and successes in areas such as governance, public participation, social harmony and inclusion, urban and housing technologies, and research. In addition, Canada wants to hear and learn how others resolve their urban challenges so Canadians can benefit from their experiences.
