Disability Issues

The Government of Canada supports numerous programs and initiatives to promote the inclusion and full participation of people with disabilities in Canadian society.

• Services for People with Disabilities (Service Canada)
• Canadians in Context – People with Disabilities: includes statistical information on people with disabilities in Canada.

Financial support for individuals and families

• Living with a Disability (Service Canada): a list of of services and financial benefits to assist people with disabilities and their families.
• Registered Disability Savings Plan: helps Canadians with disabilities and their families save for the future.
• Canada Student Grants Program: grants for students with permanent disabilities.
• Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities: helps people with disabilities prepare for, obtain and maintain employment or self-employment.
• Canada Pension Plan Disability Benefits: provides financial assistance to CPP contributors who are unable to work because of a severe and prolonged disability.

Funding programs for organizations and provinces

• Enabling Accessibility Fund: supports community-based projects across Canada that improve accessibility, remove barriers, and enable Canadians with disabilities to participate in and contribute to their communities.
• Social Development Partnerships Program – Disability: supports a wide range of community-based initiatives that provide effective approaches in addressing social issues and barriers that face people with disabilities.
• Labour Market Agreements for Persons with Disabilities: provides provinces with funding for programs and services that improve the employment situation for Canadians with disabilities.

Office for Disability Issues

The Office for Disability Issues (ODI) is a focal point within the Government of Canada for key partners working to promote the full inclusion and participation of Canadians with disabilities in all aspects of society and community life. ODI strives to provide leadership and foster excellence for the Government of Canada in this area of shared responsibilities.
