Aboriginal Futures NWT Oil and Gas Skills Development Strategy

Index of projects

The Aboriginal Skills and Employment Partnership (ASEP) initiative is helping to improve employment opportunities for Aboriginal peoples by providing skills development and employment support leading to long-term employment opportunities in the oil and gas industry of the Northwest Territories.

The non-renewable resource sector has contributed significantly to the growth of the northern economy in Canada, particularly through exploration and development activities related to oil and gas, and pipeline industries. Growth is expected to continue well into the 21st century, resulting in increased employment and business opportunities for northern Aboriginal peoples.

The Aboriginal Futures NWT Oil and Gas Skills Development Strategy is working to ensure Aboriginal people are positioned to benefit from this sector. Programs include basic skills and pre-employment, industrial skills development and employment support. The project is operating within the traditional territories of the Inuvialuit, Gwich'in, Sahtu and Deh Cho regions.

The Aboriginal Skills and Employment Partnership (ASEP) initiative is helping to shape Canada's workforce by directly matching skills development to economic opportunities.

Officially launched in 2003 as an $85-million five-year labour market initiative, ASEP is designed to maximize training and job opportunities in major economic development projects across Canada and provide lasting benefits for Aboriginal communities, families and individuals. It does this by meeting employers' needs and labour market demands for skilled workers in a cross-section of large-scale industrial sectors that include forestry, mining, oil and gas, construction and hydroelectric development.

Between 2005 and 2008 Aboriginal Futures, in collaboration with regional partners, will:

  • Create an estimated 128 to 169 long-term jobs.

Partners in this initiative include Deh Cho First Nations, Sahtu Dene Council Gwich'in Tribal Council, Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, Mackenzie Gas Project proponents and the Government of the Northwest Territories (Department of Education, Culture and Employment).
