Yukon Mine Training Association

Partnership, People, Production: Get Into It

Index of projects

The Aboriginal Skills and Employment Partnership (ASEP) program is helping improve employment opportunities for Aboriginal peoples by providing valuable skills development, on-the-job work experience and long-term employment opportunities in the Yukon mining industry.

The Yukon Mine Training Association has partnered with Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, the Government of Yukon, industry and Aboriginal communities and organizations to develop and implement the "Partnership, People, Production: Get Into It" project. Through this project, Aboriginal people will gain the skills they need to succeed in the mining industry and resource-based sectors in Yukon.

The project offers training and skills development opportunities for Aboriginal people in mining and other resource-based sectors, aiming to provide employment for approximately 500 Aboriginal people leading to at least 296 long-term employment opportunities in Yukon. Total funding for the "Partnership, People, Production: Get Into It" project could reach over $19 million over five years leading to lasting benefits for Aboriginal communities, families and individuals.

The ASEP program is helping to shape Canada’s workforce by directly matching skills development to economic opportunities.

Officially launched in 2003 as an $85-million five-year labour market initiative, ASEP is designed to maximize training and job opportunities in major economic development projects across Canada and provide lasting benefits for Aboriginal communities, families and individuals. ASEP meets employers’ needs and labour market demands for skilled workers in a cross-section of large-scale industrial sectors that include forestry, mining, oil and gas, construction and hydroelectric development.

In 2007, the Government of Canada invested an additional $105 million in the ASEP program. Canada’s Economic Action Plan 2009 is committed to enhancing the availability of training by investing an additional $100 million over three years in the ASEP program.

Partners in this initiative are Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, the Government of Yukon, Yukon First Nations, the Taku River Tlingit of British Columbia, Yukon College, Place Mining, Yukon Zinc, Tagish Lake Gold, Alexco, Kaska Minerals, Adanacmoly, North American Tungsten, Western Silver, and Sherwood.
