Losing a job can be one of the most stressful events in life, so the Labour Program works closely with both employers and employees to mitigate the potential impacts. Part III of the Canada Labour Code defines the obligations of employers in such instances. We, at the Labour Program, ensure that employers are aware of the obligations they must meet whenever an employee is dismissed, terminated or laid off. We also inform employees of their rights in specific circumstances and tell them how to seek redress if they feel they’ve been treated unfairly.
