Employment Equity

Understanding and implementing employment equity helps achieve equality and fairness in the workplace and improves overall service delivery to all Canadians. Employment equity encourages the establishment of working conditions that are free of barriers for the four designated groups in Canada: women, Aboriginal peoples, persons with disabilities and members of visible minorities.

The Labour Program ensures that the Employment Equity Act and mandates are applied appropriately to these four designated groups. It also makes sure that federally regulated employers covered under the Legislated Employment Equity Program and provincially regulated employers covered under the Federal Contractors Program understand the Act and mandates so they can meet their obligations under the Act.

Here, you will find information on how the Act applies to federally regulated private sector employers and Crown corporations, federal contractors, and the federal public sector.

We also provide employment equity tools, resources and publications to help employers fulfill their obligations under the Employment Equity Act.
