Tips and Facts

Hand Sanitizer

As a result of increased vigilance in combating the spread of viral infections, hand-sanitizing stations are being installed in many buildings. Though the benefits of these stations are thought to outweigh the potential fire risks, the storage of refill containers presents risks of its own. It is important to remember that hand sanitizers are flammable liquids. Here are some regulations to keep in mind:

  • No more than 5 litres of hand sanitizer may be stored in one room.
  • No more than 10 litres may be stored in a fire separated area.
  • Hand sanitizer may not come within 6 metres of a source of ignition.

Fire Protection

Historically, many fires occurred in government buildings due to the careless disposal of smoking materials into wastepaper baskets. As a result of the no-smoking ban inside government buildings, such fires have become very uncommon.

However, in today's world of electronic office equipment, we are seeing an increase in fire incidents due to faulty electrical equipment and power distribution systems.

Electrical fire safety tips:

  • Do not use electrical equipment that is in poor repair or that has a damaged cord.
  • Do not overload circuits or extension cords.
  • Use approved power bars instead of circuit splitters.

Keep electrical heating appliances at a safe distance from combustibles.
