
On October 4, 2011, Canada’s Labour Minister, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, presented an award at the Occupational Health and Safety Awards hosted by the Canadian Electricity Association in Ottawa. The Minister took advantage of this opportunity to underline the importance of having safe workplaces and recognized the efforts of the leaders in the sector.
The Labour Program develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and regulations. This include the Canada Labour Code, which covers industrial relations, as well as health, safety and employment standards for federally regulated workers and employers.

On October 6th, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Labour Minister, joined Fire Prevention Canada in Ottawa for the launch of Fire Prevention Week 2011. The Minister took the opportunity to remind Canadians to remain vigilant and responsive to the dangers of fire both at work and at home.
This year, Fire Prevention Week was held from October 9 to 15, and the theme was “Protect Your Family From Fire.” Every year since 1923, Fire Prevention Week reminds Canadians to stay alert and responsive to the dangers of fire to minimize injury, loss of life, property destruction and environmental damage.
The Labour Program is responsible for the administration and enforcement of occupational health and safety regulations in federally regulated workplaces. It is also responsible for the administration of fire protection standards on civilian and federal government property.

On September 27, 2011, in Toronto, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Labour Minister, attended the dinner gala of the 2011 Canada’s Safest Employers Award. At the gala, Minister Raitt took the opportunity to underline the importance of workplace safety and spoke about recent accomplishments in the field.
The Canada’s Safest Employers Award was launched in December 2010 by the Canadian Occupational Safety magazine to recognize Canadian organizations for the work they do to keep their workers and workplaces safe.

During July and August 2011, Canada’s Labour Minister, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, travelled across the country to meet with several key stakeholders, business and labour representatives about important workplace and labour Issues. Discussions covered maritime shipping within Canada, women in the workforce, international labour issues, as well as health, safety and environmental issues in the workplace.
These roundtable discussions provided an opportunity for the Minister to exchange views with, and seek input from, participants. The Minister also highlighted the Government of Canada’s commitment to safe, fair and productive workplaces that benefit both Canada’s economic prosperity and the economic security of its citizens.

These include the Canada Labour Code and the Employment Equity Act, which cover industrial relations, along with health, safety and employment standards. The Labour Program is also responsible for international labour issues by representing Canada in international forums and by negotiating and implementing international labour agreements.
