Dispute Prevention

To help improve ongoing relationships and keep the lines of communication open between employers and unions, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service offers a range of services under its Preventive Mediation Program.

The services offered must be jointly requested by the union and the employer. All Preventive Mediation services are delivered by mediators who have extensive experience in various approaches to labour relations. The programs are customized to meet the specific needs of a particular workplace and no fee is charged for the service.

The following is a list of services offered through the Preventive Mediation Program:

• The Interest-Based Negotiation Workshop deals with the negotiation process and promotes informal discussions between the parties.
• The Committee Effectiveness Workshop focuses on planning, running effective meetings and consensus decision-making within unionized workplaces.
• The Joint Problem-Solving Workshop is designed for parties who wish to explore new ways of working together.
• The Grievance Workshop enables union representatives and employers to analyze their grievance resolution procedure and to determine whether it still meets their needs.
• The Negotiations Practices Workshop is an opportunity for parties to improve their negotiating practices.
• Facilitation Services provides a mediator who acts as a facilitator in the negotiation process or in the resolution of certain problems.
• The Relationship by Objectives Program enables the parties to redesign labour relationships that have deteriorated.
• Grievance Mediation is an informal alternative to arbitration that enables the parties to attempt to resolve grievances and their underlying issues with the aid of a mediator.
• Supervisor-Steward Joint Training deals with day-to-day interactions between parties.
• Change Management assistance is available to both parties involved in organizational change.
