Grievance mediation offers labour and management an informal and low-cost alternative to arbitration. It provides employers and unions with an opportunity to meet and attempt to resolve grievances and their underlying issues with the assistance of an experienced and neutral third party.
Grievance mediation is provided by mediation/conciliation officers of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service who have considerable expertise in labour relations.
However, if the parties are unable to resolve the grievance, they retain their right to proceed to arbitration.
