1. Diaspora Education Consortium

HRSDC Funding: $199,683

Canadian partner institutions:

  • University of the Fraser Valley (BC)
  • York University (Ontario)

European partner institutions:

  • Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (Germany)
  • University of Northampton (United Kingdom)

Students and faculty from Canada and the EU will participate in an international network committed to learning, teaching, researching and working within diaspora communities (migration or scattering of people from their original homelands). Through a common comparative course, an on-line directed studies course, and service learning placements, students will develop the knowledge and skills to support them in future careers and studies in this field.


2. Sustainable Development : Value Added Wood Processing and Wood Used in Green Buildings

HRSDC Funding: $200,000

Canadian partner institutions:

  • Collège Communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick
  • La Cité collégiale d’Ottawa (Ontario)

European partner institutions:

  • École Supérieure du Bois (France)
  • North Karelia University of Applied Sciences (Finland)

Partner institutions will collaborate through the joint development of multidimensional educational activities aimed at preservation of natural resources and the environment. Students will participate in exchanges and benefit by acquiring knowledge in the field of building engineering, and the use of wood applied to building construction, increasing their skills and capacity to address ecological and economic challenges.


3. Trans-Atlantic Neuroscience Teaching Network

HRSDC Funding: $199,572

Canadian partner institutions:

  • Dalhousie University (Nova Scotia)
  • University of Montreal (Quebec)

European partner institutions:

  • Maastricht University (Netherlands)
  • Cologne University (Germany)

This program will provide international exchange opportunities for neuroscience students at the Master’s level. By studying abroad and undertaking research apprenticeships, participating students will develop a unique, strong and diverse knowledge base and skills set in neuroscience. Both mobile and non-mobile students will benefit from an innovative curriculum, improved teaching practices, and the development of an international joint degree program resulting from the institutional academic partnerships.


4. Strengthening Transatlantic Student Mobility in Co-operative Education

HRSDC Funding: $191,598

Canadian partner institutions:

  • University of Waterloo (Ontario)
  • University of Victoria (BC)

European partner institutions:

  • FH JOANNEUM - University of Applied Sciences (Austria)
  • Baden-Württemberg Heidenheim State University of Cooperative Education (Germany)

A partnership will be formed among four leading universities in the promotion of cooperative education. The partner institutions will share and implement best practices with respect to work and study exchanges within the framework of co-operative education in an international context. Participating students will enhance their learning by undertaking academic and cooperative education work terms during their study abroad exchanges.


5. Student Exchange Program in Intelligent Computer Systems

HRSDC Funding: $200,000

Canadian partner institutions:

  • Université de Montréal (Quebec)
  • University of New Brunswick

European partner institutions:

  • Technological Educational Institute of Crete (Greece)
  • University of Glamorgan (UK)
  • Université de La Rochelle (France)

Collaboration among the partner institutions in the field of intelligent systems in computer science will result in the creation of an advanced pool of courses. The partner institutions will utilize web-based technologies and develop a new concept to establish an international virtual laboratory. Students in Canada and the EU will have opportunities for exchange and for collaborative interaction with each other, using a web-based cooperation system.


6. Sustaining Responsible Entrepreneurship: An International Experience

HRSDC Funding: $199,600

Canadian partner institutions:

  • Nova Scotia Agricultural College
  • Laval University (Québec)

European partner institutions:

  • Dronten University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands)
  • École supérieure d’agriculture d’Angers (France)

Students at partner institutions will explore, study and experience an understanding of socially responsible entrepreneurship, as applied to the agriculture and food industry, in an international setting. With exposure to language, cross-cultural business practices and international relations, they will acquire competencies in international entrepreneurship leading to a Certificate in Responsible International Entrepreneurship.


7. Enhancing International Earth Science Competence in Natural Hazards Research

HRSDC Funding: $194,960

Canadian partner institutions:

  • Simon Fraser University (BC)
  • University of British Columbia
  • Queen’s University (Ontario)

European partner institutions:

  • Università degli Studi di Torino (Italy)
  • National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece)
  • University of Savoie (France)
  • Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna (Italy)

The project will improve knowledge and skills required for assessment and management of natural hazards. It supports graduate student exchanges in Earth Sciences and Engineering Geology and promotes cross-cultural understanding and internationalization of university curricula. Students will benefit from field training involving classic natural hazard case studies in Canada and Europe. Work-study programs with industry partners will supply professional skills in advanced geotechnology applications.


8. Transatlantic Diffusion of Sustainability Through Environmental Sciences and Engineering Programs

HRSDC Funding: $200,000

Canadian partner institutions:

  • Laval University (Quebec)
  • University of Ottawa (Ontario)
  • University of British Columbia

European partner institutions:

  • Dublin City University (Ireland)
  • Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna di Studi Universitari e di Perfezionamento (Italy)
  • Trinity College (Ireland)

Students will receive training which utilizes emerging sustainable science and engineering principles and technical tools. They will follow technically rich international curricula in a transatlantic exchange experience, and address environmental issues associated with water, air and soil pollution. The project will assist students in becoming technically and socially skilled when studying and monitoring environmental problems worldwide, and will also develop interactive communication tools to support long distance learning.
