1. Canadian and European Cities in MegaRegions: Planning for the Global World

HRSDC Funding: $200,000

Canadian partner institutions:

  • Laval University (Québec)
  • University of British Columbia

European partner institutions:

  • Universitat de Barcelona (Spain)
  • University College Dublin (Ireland)

This project will develop a new framework for urban planning and public investment by examining, documenting and comparing methods, ideas, designs and programs that unite people across jurisdictional boundaries. Practical solutions for the next generation of urban policymakers will be developed using four important Canadian and European cities: Quebec City, Vancouver, Barcelona and Dublin as the setting for MegaRegion studies. A Specialization or Certificate in Canadian-European urban studies known as the International Track will be created.


2. Trans-Atlantic Network Established for Converting Brownfields into Community Assets

HRSDC Funding: $200,000

Canadian partner institutions:

  • University of Moncton (New Brunswick)

European partner institutions:

  • University of Oradea (Romania)
  • Université des Antilles et de la Guyane (France)

The project will provide transatlantic mobility opportunities for Canadian students, including a practical component dealing with the multi-faceted issues associated with the redevelopment of inner city industrial brownfields. Students will undertake comparative studies of brownfield remediation strategies in order to develop field methodologies and original research on brownfield management, thereby gaining international perspectives in this area of study.


3. Cross Atlantic Partnership in Network Systems and Information Management

HRSDC Funding: $200,000

European partner institutions:

  • Université de Bretagne-Sud (France)
  • Turku University of Applied Sciences (Finland)
  • University of Pécs (Hungary)

The goal of the program is to establish sustainable partnerships between Canadian and European higher-education institutions in the field of information management that will facilitate the acquisition of skills required to meet the challenges of information management in the context of the global knowledge-based economy. Students will have the opportunity to study abroad at participating institutions and/or intern with an organization in the Information Technology and/or Information Management sector. This will allow the students to develop practical and academic knowledge related to their particular field of expertise, within an international context.


4. A Multicultural Exploration into Research and Education for Surface Computing

HRSDC Funding: $200,000

Canadian partner institutions:

  • University of Waterloo (Ontario)
  • Queen’s University (Ontario)
  • University of Manitoba
  • University of Calgary (Alberta)

European partner institutions:

  • Otto-von-Guericke-University of Magdeburg (Germany)
  • Austria University of Applied Sciences
  • Telecom Bretagne (France)
  • French Civil Aviation University

This project will formally initiate student and faculty exchange across several Canadian and European institutions in the area of interactive surface computing systems. This important technology field includes multi-touch smartphones and digital wall and tabletop systems which provide means for accessing and sharing digital information and media. Students will benefit by gaining enhanced knowledge and understanding of computer technology.


5. Transatlantic Business Process Management Education Network

HRSDC Funding: $200,000

  • McGill University (Quebec)
  • University of Ontario Institute of Technology

European partner institutions:

  • Freie Universität Berlin (Germany)
  • University of Coimbra (Portugal)
  • FH JOANNEUM University of Applied Sciences (Austria)

The project will assist students in their understanding of business process management in its industrial application and implementation with modern information technologies. Partner institutions will collaborate in establishing a transatlantic network designed to foster mobility, international communication and collaborative learning.


6. Tradewinds Exchange Programme

HRSDC Funding: $199,986

Canadian partner institutions:

  • Fanshawe College (Ontario)
  • University of the Fraser Valley (British Columbia)
  • Memorial University (Newfoundland and Labrador)

European partner institutions:

  • Waterford Institute of Technology (Ireland)
  • University of Glamorgan (United Kingdom)
  • ESC Bretagne Brest (France)

This project will unite students and faculty from Canada and the EU in creating and participating in an international network committed to regional economic development in diverse transnational locations. In addition to providing opportunities for student exchange, the partner institutions will collaborate in developing a common curriculum in regional economic development which will provide international perspectives for business students.


7. Energy Efficiency in the Built Environment

HRSDC Funding: $194,590

Canadian partner institutions:

  • Nova Scotia Community College
  • Holland College (Prince Edward Island)

European partner institutions:

  • Hanze University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands)
  • Institute of Technology Carlow (Ireland)

This project will bring together education leaders from post-secondary colleges, vocational and trade training institutions in Canada and Europe in the area of Engineering Technology. Transatlantic project-based learning experiences will provide students with the practical skills and international context required to take a leadership role in significantly improving energy efficiency practice in the built environment industry.


8. Managing and Conserving Forests for Multiple Values

HRSDC Funding: $200,000

Canadian partner institutions:

  • University of Alberta
  • Vancouver Island University (British Columbia)
  • Laval University (Quebec)

European partner institutions:

  • University of Transylvania (Romania)
  • Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague (Czech Republic)
  • Georg-August Universität Göttingen (Germany)

The project is designed to increase awareness and knowledge of forest conservation and management practices under changing climates in different regions of the world. This transatlantic exchange partnership will enhance mutual understanding, provide valuable training for students, and enhance collaboration and exchange between Canadian and European universities in the field of sustainable forestry.


9. Bio Power: Transatlantic Empowering the Skills, Knowledge and Know-how in Teaching and Learning Bio Energy Entrepreneurship

HRSDC Funding: $200,000

Canadian partner institutions:

  • New Brunswick Community College
  • Nipissing University (Ontario)

European partner institutions:

  • North Karelia University of Applied Sciences (Finland)
  • Slovak Agricultural University in Nitra (Slovakia)

This partnership will increase awareness of the important subject of wood based bio energy as a renewable energy solution as well as the positive impact of sustainable development. The project utilizes a multidisciplinary approach including technical aspects of wood based bio energy with a particular focus on the shared knowledge among the partners and the promotion of bio energy as a standard of development. The partner institutions will foster improved, better integration of bio energy practices by involving companies active in the field and preparing their future employees with the latest best practice techniques.


10. Transatlantic Forestry Master’s Programs Leading to Dual Degrees (2010-2014)

HRSDC Funding: $450,000

  • Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, Freiburg (Germany)
  • University of Wales, Bangor (United Kingdom)

This project will support student exchanges in the area of natural resource, forest and environmental management. The central activity is delivery of 2-year course-based Master’s programs leading to dual degrees in natural resources and environmental management. Students will be educated in modern sustainable management enhanced by attention to cultural and situational differences. They will acquire global and multi-cultural awareness about economic and environmental issues inherent in sustainable natural resource and environmental management, while earning full credit recognition towards a dual, transatlantic Masters Degree.
