1. The Alliance to Achieve and Maintain Competitiveness in Logistics Through Strategic Leadership within NAFTA

HRSDC Funding: $160,000

Canadian partner institutions:

  • University of Prince Edward Island
  • Royal Roads University (British Columbia)

The American partner institutions are:

  • Texas A&M University – Commerce Campus
  • California State University – San Bernardino

The Mexican partner institutions are:

  • Universidad de Colima
  • Universidad de Guanajuato

This project will introduce students to an innovative curriculum that focuses on logistics, leadership, and international business, and will develop their understanding of North American cultures and languages through student mobility. By using cumulative knowledge gained from the logistics and strategic leadership literature, as well as best practices currently being used in North American organizations, this consortium will prepare undergraduate students to meet future North American business challenges.


2. The Role of Civil Society Organisations in Sustainable Community Development

HRSDC Funding: $160,000

Canadian partner institutions:

  • Carleton University (Ontario)
  • University of Victoria (British Columbia)
  • Cape Breton University (Nova Scotia)

The American partner institutions are:

  • Baruch College, City University of New York
  • University of South Florida

The Mexican partner institutions are:

  • Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla
  • Universidad Autónomo de Tamaulipas
  • Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey

This multi-disciplinary project includes urban studies, community development, public policy, international affairs, engineering, geography, social work and (civil society) non-profit and third sector studies. Through course work and supported community development internships, students will seek to understand both the policy and practical implications of the shift towards citizen engagement and place-based decision-making for social, economic, and environmental sustainability. Students will undertake community and neighbourhood initiatives, plan and implement outreach strategies, and conduct community assessments.


3. Alliance to Promote the Sustainability of the Environment Through Energy Efficiency Across NAFTA

HRSDC Funding: $160,000

  • University of Moncton (New Brunswick)
  • Ryerson University (Ontario)

The American partner institutions are:

  • University of Louisiana at Lafayette
  • Lamar University (Texas)

The Mexican partner institutions are:

  • Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí
  • Universidad Panamericana Campus Guadalajara y Aguascalientes

The project will promote energy efficiency in the field of mechanical engineering while providing opportunities to students to study abroad, or to participate in an internship. Students will experience new and different approaches to energy efficiency in the field of Engineering in respect of the wide range of environments found in North America while acquiring cultural, language and international competencies associated with the partner countries and regions.


4. North American Consortium on Rehabilitation Engineering and Healthcare Technology For the Individual

HRSDC Funding:$133,168

Canadian partner institutions:

  • University of Toronto (Ontario)

The American partner institutions are:

  • Marquette University (Wisconsin)
  • University of Illinois at Chicago

The Mexican partner institutions are:

  • Universidad Guadalajara
  • Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey/Campus Chihuahua

This project is designed to increase students’ awareness of the differing individual, family and community rehabilitative healthcare needs in North America. The goal is to increase students’ understanding of alternative healthcare delivery systems and to enhance the development and technology transfer of new scientific tools and techniques, medical devices, and related medical biomedical research.


5. NAFTA-Preneur: Developing Students’ International Entrepreneurial Working Skills in a Cross-Cultural Environment

HRSDC Funding: $160,000

Canadian partner institutions:

  • Centennial College of Applied Arts and Technology (Ontario)
  • CÉGEP de Sherbrooke (Québec)

The American partner institutions are:

  • St. Philip’s Community College (Texas)
  • Pima College (Arizona)

The Mexican partner institutions are:

  • Universidad Technologica de Tulancingo
  • Universidad Technologica de Cancun

This project brings together education leaders from Canada, the United States, and Mexico in Business, International Trade and Management studies. Students will benefit by acquiring specialized knowledge of NAFTA issues along with new entrepreneurial skills designed to assist them in working effectively as part of a tri-national, multicultural team within a cross-cultural environment.


6. Framing the Future: Green Building Technology

HRSDC Funding: $160,000

Canadian partner institutions:

  • St. Lawrence College (Ontario)
  • New Brunswick Community College

The American partner institutions are:

  • College of the Mainland (Texas)
  • Daytona State College ( Florida)

The Mexican partner institutions are:

  • Instituto Tecnológico Superior de Villa La Venta
  • Instituto Tecnológico de Veracruz

This multi-disciplinary project will focus on study areas of Wood Processing, Environmental Engineering, Economics and Marketing. The Green Building technology consortium will provide new academic programming that will allow business students and construction students to become specialists in green building technology and design within a North American context.


7. Profiles in Entrepreneurship: North American Models of Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship

HRSDC Funding: $160,000

Canadian partner institutions:

  • University of Manitoba
  • Laurentian University (Ontario)

The American partner institutions are:

  • The State University of New York – Plattsburgh
  • University of North Dakota

The Mexican partner institutions are:

  • Universidad de Guadalajara
  • Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon

This tri-lateral consortium of education leaders in the area of Business and Entrepreneurship will assist students to increase their professional mobility. Students will acquire the skill sets, experiences, and knowledge base necessary to understand, analyse, develop models, and practice entrepreneurship in Canadian, Mexican and/or US markets.


8. Developing Public Policy Capacities in a North American Context: Investigating (Mis)Perceptions and Building New Continental Frameworks

HRSDC Funding: $159,600

Canadian partner institutions:

  • Wilfrid Laurier University (Ontario)
  • University of New Brunswick

The American partner institutions are:

  • Georgia Southern University
  • University of Vermont

The Mexican partner institutions are:

  • Universidad Veracruzana
  • Tecnológico de Monterrey

The consortium will develop educational opportunities that examine the range of differing points of view across North America, while building knowledge and skills that address inaccuracies and stereotypes. Training the next generation to be well-informed citizens who, having recognized the interconnectedness of continental issues and peoples, will meaningfully influence public policy choices.


9. Tri-National Indigenous Rural Tourism and Community Development (ITOUR)

HRSDC Funding: $155,820

Canadian partner institutions:

  • University of Northern British Columbia
  • University College of the North (Manitoba)

The American partner institutions are:

  • New Mexico State University
  • Diné Tribal College (New Mexico)

The Mexican partner institutions are:

  • Universidad Tecnologica del Valle del Mezquital
  • Universidad Tecnologica de la Selva

This project brings together education leaders from Canada, the United States, and Mexico in the area of tourism and rural development. The goal is to increase the capacity of students to work in developing rural tourism programs and expand university outreach to indigenous communities through the creation of common curricula and linkages between countries in the emerging field of indigenous tourism.


10. Migration Studies Initiatives to Promote Curricular Development and a North American Community

HRSDC Funding: $152,680

Canadian partner institutions:

  • York University (Ontario)
  • Concordia University (Quebec)

The American partner institutions are:

  • Loyola University Chicago (Illinois)
  • De Paul University (Illinois)

The Mexican partner institutions are:

  • Universidad de Guanajuato
  • Universidad Iberoamericana

The project will provide students in the fields of social work, education, psychology and sociology with a comprehensive and uniquely North American perspective and curricular focus on migration and immigrant integration. Students will benefits from the acquisition of knowledge garnered from the vantage points of migrant origin, transit, and destination countries.
