The Going to Canada Immigration Portal

A source of free and useful information for newcomers and prospective immigrants, the Going to Canada Immigration Portal is located at www.goingtocanada.gc.ca. The Portal provides seamless on-line information and services from a variety of government and non-government sources to help newcomers and prospective immigrants to Canada make informed decisions about coming to Canada and better prepare them, before and after they arrive, for integration into the Canadian labour market and society.

Human Resource and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) co-manage the development of an integrated, comprehensive, national immigration portal in collaboration with the provinces and territories.

The Portal can help prepare newcomers and prospective immigrants, for living and working in Canada by:

  • Providing a primary point of access to authoritative information, services and tools that will allow them to make informed decisions about settling in different regions of Canada;
  • Increasing awareness of the opportunities, challenges and barriers awaiting prospective immigrants, so that they may better prepare for the labour market before coming to Canada;
  • Making local connections through links with provinces, territories, municipalities and communities; and Highlighting Canada as a destination of choice for skilled immigrants.

Working in Canada

Human Resource and Social Development Canada is responsible for the Working in Canada section of the Portal (www.workingincanada.gc.ca) which is comprised of two main sections:

  • The Guide to Working in Canada helps newcomers and prospective immigrants get ready for the challenges associated with finding a job in Canada. It offers information on: the Canadian Government, the Canadian workplace and employment system, labour market challenges, how to find a job in Canada, the rights of a worker, etc.
  • The Working in Canada Tool can help newcomers and prospective immigrants decide where to live and work in Canada. The Tool provides visitors with concrete information about the Canadian labour market through reports that can be tailored to a specific occupation and geographic area (city, town, or region).

These reports offer detailed job descriptions, information about regulated occupations, wage information, skills, outlooks and prospects, language training, available job opportunities and much more.
