Employers hiring Mexican foreign workers under the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) may deduct $2.16 per working day from the worker's wage, to offset the costs of housing utilities. This deduction only applies to workers who signed their employment contract on or after July 1st 2011. Employers must verify the date the worker signed the contract to determine if the deduction applies or not. Should the worker not have his or her contract, the employer must phone the consulate to obtain the information.
Also, the deduction is only applicable in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan (workers employed by greenhouses and nurseries are exempted from this deduction in the province of Saskatchewan).
