Labour Force Trends – The labour market rebounded in August with an increase in the number of full-time jobs.

  • Compared with July 2011, employment in the province increased by a total of 2,200 full-time jobs.
  • This increase is a change in direction from the downward trend of the previous months.
  • The unemployment rate dropped by 0.9 percentage points to 9.2%, as the number of unemployed people decreased.
  • Employment dropped by 6,100 jobs compared to August of last year, and the employment rate was down by 1.2 points.
  • The number of full-time jobs decreased by 8,700, while the number of part-time jobs rose by 2,600.
  • Year over year, the number of unemployed people increased by 2,600, and the unemployment rate grew by 0.5 points.

Employment by Industry – Compared to July, employment decreased in the goods-producing sector and increased in the service-producing sector.

  • Compared to July, employment was down in the goods-producing sector this month, continuing the trend which began at the beginning of 2011.
  • In the service-producing sector, employment rose for the second consecutive month, but more sharply than in previous months. The accommodation and food services industry posted the largest increase.
  • Nonetheless, a downward trend has been observed in the service-producing sector over the past year.

  • Year over year, the province lost a total of 6,100 jobs as a result of a decrease of 5,500 jobs in the service-producing sector and 600 jobs in the goods-producing sector.
  • Employment rose sharply in manufacturing, but decreased in construction.
  • Job losses were observed in several service-producing sectors; however, the accommodation and food services posted a significant increase in employment.

Economic Regions - The labour market improved in Saint John - St. Stephen and in Campbellton - Miramichi. Significant declines were posted in the other economic regions.

  • Employment was up by 2,600 jobs in Saint John - St.Stephen and by 1,500 in Campbellton - Miramichi.
  • Employment decreased in Edmundston - Woodstock (4,400), Fredericton - Oromocto (3,400) and Moncton - Richibucto (3,200).
  • The employment rate rose in Saint John - St Stephen, Saint John and Campbellton - Miramichi, while the other regions experienced sharp decreases.
  • The unemployment rate rose everywhere, except in Saint John - St. Stephen (including Saint John), where it went down and in Edmundston - Woodstock where it remained unchanged.
