
The Labour Market Monitor is an overview of the Toronto Economic Region of Ontario, including the City of Toronto, and the regional municipalities of Durham, York, Halton, and Peel.
Construction on the new Humber River Regional Hospital in Toronto began in December by the Plenary Health Care Partnerships. At the peak of construction, more than 1,200 workers will be on site daily. The project is expected to cost approximately $1.75B and should be complete in the spring of 2015. Construction of the new Forensic Services and Coroner's Complex in Toronto continues by Carillon Canada. The project is expected to cost $497M and should be complete by the end of January 2013. At the peak of construction, approximately 450 workers were on site daily. (Daily Commercial News, December 12)
Construction of the Hanlan Water Project in Mississauga began in December. This is the largest watermain project undertaken by the Regional Municipality of Peel. It involves designing and constructing two large watermains that will be installed through open-cut and tunnelling construction practices. The project is expected to cost $480M and should be complete by the end of 2015. (Regional Municipality of Peel, December 1)
Construction of the Markham Stouffville Hospital redevelopment project is almost halfway finished. The project, being built by PCL Constructors Canada Inc., is expected to cost $200.4M and should be complete by early 2013. At the peak of construction, approximately 300 workers are expected to be on site daily. (Canada Newswire, December 16)
Hydro One Inc. is upgrading five transformer stations, including three in the Toronto region, at a cost of $190M. The improvements are expected to create 115 construction jobs at the five locations and should be complete by the end of 2013. (Hydro One, December 13)
New home sales have increased by 5.6% in the Greater Toronto Area in November 2011 compared to the same period in 2010. (Building Industry and Land Development Association, December 20)
According to the company press release, General Motors of Canada Ltd. is investing $68M in its Oshawa Assembly Plant, which will help secure approximately 350 positions. The investment will allow the plant to start producing the new Chevrolet Impala in January 2013. (General Motors of Canada Ltd., December 16)
Goodrich Corp., a manufacturer of aerospace systems and services, is investing in new landing gear technologies at its Oakville facility, which will create 31 new jobs and support 37 existing positions. The five-year $94.7M investment is supported by a $3.3M grant from the Government of Ontario. (Canadian Manufacturing, December 14)
In the Toronto area, existing home sales increased by 11% in November 2011 compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, the average selling price increased by almost 10% in November 2011 compared to the same period of 2010. (Toronto Real Estate Board, December 6)
KUKA Robotics Canada Ltd., a subsidiary of KUKA Roboter GmbH, opened a new facility in Mississauga in December. The centre has applications, engineering, sales and service staff for customer support. (Financial Post, December 7)
Flowfinity Wireless Inc., a provider of enterprise mobile applications, opened a new data centre in Toronto in December. (Flowfinity Wireless Inc., December 20)
A Stock Restaurant Bar & Lounge will open inside the new Trump International Hotel & Tower in Toronto in January 2012. (Toronto Star, December 5)
Indie Alehouse Brewing Co. will open a craft brewery, with a restaurant and store attached, in west Toronto, near High Park, in January 2012. (Restaurant News, December 12)
