Support for skilled trades

The Government of Canada is taking action to build opportunities in the trades, encourage apprenticeship training in the workplace and support more young Canadians in pursuing careers in the skilled trades.

The 2006 budget introduced:

  • a new deduction of up to $500 to tradespeople for the costs of tools used for work
  • a new tax credit of up to $2,000 per year for employers who hire apprentices
  • a cash grant of $1,000 per year to most apprentices in the first two years of the program

The Government of Canada is working with provinces and territories, employers and unions to move forward on addressing shortages in the skilled trades.

Skills shortage will not hold us up!
