The skilled trades offer in-demand, recognized and well-paid careers. In many skilled trades, apprenticeship training is an essential step to becoming a certified tradesperson. The Government of Canada is working with its partners to increase apprenticeship opportunities for Canadians in the Red Seal trades and to promote a highly skilled and mobile workforce in Canada.

The Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Programpromotes common standards and certification programs to make it easier for skilled tradespeople to work anywhere in Canada. Apprentices who complete their training also earn higher wages. For a complete list of Red Seal trades, visit red-seal.ca. To find out more about Red Seal trades in your province or territory, contact your apprenticeship office.

What money is available?

Eligible apprentices can get up to $4,000 in federal apprenticeship grants:

  • the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG) — is a taxable cash grant of $1,000 per year or level, up to a maximum amount of $2,000 per person. It is available to apprentices once they have completed their first and/or second year or level (or equivalent) of an apprenticeship program in a designated Red Seal trade;
  • the Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG) — is a taxable cash grant of $2,000 for registered apprentices who complete their apprenticeship training and obtain their journeyperson certification in a designated Red Seal trade.

A grant is not a loan and never needs to be repaid.

Am I eligible for the AIG?

To be eligible for the AIG, you must:

  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person;
  • be a registered apprentice with a provincial/territorial apprenticeship authority in a designated Red Seal trade; and
  • be able to provide proof that you have successfully completed either the first and/or second year or level (or equivalent) in a designated Red Seal trade.

When can I apply for the AIG?

You can apply for the AIG after completing your first and/or second year or level (or equivalent) of your apprenticeship program in a designated Red Seal trade. Service Canada must receive your application by June 30 of the year after you complete the first and/or second year or level.

Support for skilled trades

In addition to the AIG and the ACG, you can also apply for employment insurance benefits during your technical in-school training.

Other benefits available to you through the Canada Revenue Agency (cra.gc.ca) are:

  • the Tradesperson’s Tools Deduction; and
  • the Apprentice Mechanic Tools Expenses.
Employers who hire apprentices can apply for the Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit — a tax credit for employers who hire Red Seal apprentices.

1. Complete the guided online application form at servicecanada.gc.ca/apprenticeship

2. Mail or deliver any supporting documentation to Service Canada.

Am I eligible for the ACG?

To be eligible for the ACG, you must:

  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person;
  • be out of high school;
  • show that you have completed an apprenticeship program as a registered apprentice in a designated Red Seal trade; and
  • provide proof that you have received your journeyperson certification in a designated Red Seal trade.

When can I apply for the ACG?

You can apply for the ACG after completing your apprenticeship program and receiving your journeyperson certification in a designated Red Seal trade. Service Canada must receive your application by June 30 of the year after you complete your apprenticeship and receive your journeyperson certification.
